What is public housing?
Public housing provides safe and affordable housing for eligible families, seniors, and people with disabilities, depending on their income. Local housing authorities get aid from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide low-rent housing.
Who is eligible for public housing?
Public housing is only for low-income families and individuals. To be eligible, the housing authority looks at:
- Your annual income;
- If you qualify as a family, a senior, or a person with a disability, and
- Your U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
Income limits
Generally, if you are considered low-income that means your income is at 80% of the median (or right in the middle) income for the county or area that you want to live in. Very-low income means that your income limit is at 50% of the median income for the county or area where you want to live. Because the income levels depend on where you want to live and your family size, it’s best to check with your local housing authority.
